1. Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program partners with universities and nonprofits around the globe to provide cohorts of U.S. students an opportunity to study the language and culture in a country/location where the target language is commonly spoken. The CLS Program, through its CLS Spark initiative, provides beginner-level virtual instruction for Arabic, Chinese, and Russian for competitively selected U.S. undergraduate students whose home campuses do not offer these languages. CLS scholars are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship and apply their critical language skills in their future careers. Find more information here.

2. Center for the Study of Arabic Abroad (CASA)
New message from CASA: “We’ve extended the CASA deadline to Monday, March 4, 2024. This is also the new deadline for reference letters and exams. You can find more information on our website: https://arabicspecialprograms.arizona.edu/casa” 

CASA offers advanced level training in Arabic language and culture to qualified American students at The American University in Cairo and Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman for a nine-month program. Applicants to the various CASA programs must be US citizens or permanent residents and should have the equivalent of at least 3 years of formal instruction in Arabic prior to joining CASA. The 2024-2025 CASA I, II, and III Application links will be posted by early November. Deadlines will be updated by late October. Please check back for updates. If you wish to review the process, most will remain the same.

Prof. Beck is a CASA alumna and encourages anyone interested in continuing their Arabic language study to consider applying for the CASA programs.

3. Middlebury Language Schools:

Middlebury offers funding opportunities and scholarships for students attending HBCUs, HSIs, Tribal College, and Queens College is an HSI. Find out more information here.

Funding: Recipients of these scholarships will receive funding to cover the total fee (tuition, room & board) for one summer of any language.

Eligibility: The opportunity to apply for this scholarship is open to all students who meet the below criteria, regardless of citizenship. Scholarships are limited (approximately 8 scholarships are awarded each summer) and highly competitive. Students are strongly encouraged to also apply for regular Middlebury need-based financial aid.

4. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. Find out more information here.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

5. Summer Arabic Language and Media (SALAM)

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Summer Arabic Language and Media (SALAM) program in the Sultanate of Oman. SALAM is a fully-funded intensive Arabic language scholarship program. SALAM 2024 will be held at the Sultan Qaboos Institute for Teaching Arabic Language to Non-native Speakers in Manah, Oman. This intensive Arabic language program will allow students to gain a deeper knowledge of Arabic, while becoming familiar with Omani history and culture. Find out more information here

6. Ibn Battuta Arabic Scholarships

Ibn Battuta Arabic Scholarships aim to reward students for excellence and dedication to the study of the Arabic language as well as promote the study of Arabic as a foreign language. Prospective students may apply to either one of the semester programs (fall, spring) or else to one of the winter and summer programs offered at the Qalam wa Lawh center in Rabat Morocco.
